Cumbria v Northumberland
The Cumbria team were Shirley Dalton - Eden; Denise Dixon - Carlisle; Serena Varah - Silloth; Helen Holmes - Silecroft/Seascale; Joan Britland - Carlisle ; Vanessa Brennand - Kendal; Christine Hough - Carus Green; Gail Gravett - Penrith; Julia Taylor - Kirkby Lonsdale; Val Forsythe - Brampton; Brenda McCaffrey - Seascale; Sandra Dickinson - Carus Green.
We arrived at Arcot Hall to a warm welcome from Northumberland President Lesley Barnes and Vice Captain Helen Cooper. The sun had not made up its mind whether to appear or not but did show its face later during the match.
The matches were close and the first three matches ended 2/1 with the first match going to Cumbria. The fourth match was 3/1 to Northumberland so it was all to play for and Cumbria certainly did that. The fifth pair were 5 down but showed such great determination to end up winning 2 up. What a fantastic result. The overall result was then hinging on the last pairing who won their match 1 up. Another great result! This meant an overall draw of 3:3 and Cumbria retaining the Two Counties Bronze Division Shield. This was a fair result as both teams played with passion and determination. I took the shield to Arcot Hall and was delighted to bring it back to Cumbria!
CVLGA President Alyson Wood, Captain Judy Davidson and Rose Saunders were there to support the team and also take the many photos and hand out the goodies to the players.
Two Cumbria team members received their county colours namely Denise Dixon and Helen Holmes. They were certainly well deserved. The whole team played so well.
We had a lovely meal in the clubhouse where we were joined by Arcot Hall Lady Captain Linda who gave a short speech after the meal, prior to the results and presentation.
I should also add that we were privileged to see a flying display from the two Red Kites who apparently reside in the trees on the golf course.

The annual match for the inter-county shield was blessed with dry but quite dull and cold weather. Team members for this second Bronze match in 2024 were Linda Wilson, Bridget Coy, Jill Alcock all Penrith GC; Amanda Moffat and Serena Varah, Silloth GC; Pam Lear, Vickie Thompson, Kendal GC; Jill Kelso, Keswick GC; Elaine Wilson and Liz Mumberson, Cockermouth GC and Chris Hough, Carus Green GC.
In keeping with all the previous matches, Cumbria President, Sue Cotter started the matches on the first tee. The atmosphere and team spirit were excellent, with Cumbria winning by 4 points to 2. Excellent golf was played throughout with some partnerships from both teams combining really well. Well done ladies.
The course was in excellent condition despite the challenging weather conditions faced by the Greens Staff. County colours were awarded to Elaine Wilson after a pleasant meal for her first County match.
Finally, I am pleased to report that Judy continues to make good progress, recovering from her operation and is looking forward to coming back home. Today’s win will, I’m sure, give her a welcome boost.

The Bronze team were drawn from the top qualifiers in our County Championship and they were - Maureen Nelson, Liz Hall and Kathleen Robinson from Appleby; Brenda McCaffrey and Sue Ridout, Seascale; Gail Gravett, Penrith; Margaret English and Serena Varah both Silloth; Julia Taylor and Diane Law representing Kirkby Lonsdale, Helena Earl from Workington and Brenda Spilsbury from Barrow.
And what a team they proved to be!
County colours were presented to Maureen Nelson, Gail Gravett and Sue Ridout for representing Cumbria for the first time; an honour to have awarded them to you Ladies.
Thanks must go to the Northumberland Vice Captain, Su Cummings, and to all her fellow club and team members for making us feel so welcomed. We all thoroughly enjoyed the course and the hospitality. I also thoroughly enjoyed my first event as Vice Captain; a big thank you to everyone involved for making it such a memorable event.
2022 Cumbria v Northumberland
The Cumbria bronze team arrived at Furness GC for our annual match against Northumberland.
The links showed its true colours with a challenging wind off the sea but thankfully no rain.
All the matches were keenly contested with the majority finishing at the 17th or 18th.
The final result was a win for Cumbria 5-1
A big thanks to Furness allowing us the use of the course and Alyson (Capt) for all her help with the organisation.
Well done to Margaret English for receiving County Colours.
It has been a real pleasure to be with the team this year.

We had a slightly different team from the Durham match. The team members were Liz Mumberson, Bronze Champion – Cockermouth, Linda Wilson – Penrith, Julia Taylor – Kirkby Lonsdale, Pam Lear, Maggie Donald and Edith Pitman – Kendal, Liz Hall and Kathleen Robinson – Appleby, Brenda Spilsbury and Pat Duxbury – Barrow, Chris Hough – Carus Green and Brenda McCaffrey – Seascale.
All matches were played in great spirit and it was a pleasure to watch. We finished the day with a lovely meal.
