Yorkshire 2025

Richardson Trophy Match Cumbria v Yorkshire on Monday 28th July 2025

at Wakefield Golf Club

Cumbria’s last away match was played at Wakefield Golf course and with preferred lies being used on the dry fairways, and many of them treelined, the course proved to be very tricky for our ladies.

The weather behaved itself on both days even for the practice round! and the match day itself was breezy with a combination of sun and cloud.

Yorkshire fielded a strong team who proved to be very tough opponents and although our ladies battled hard and never gave up, we were unable to win any points, so the match finished with a 7 – 0 win to Yorkshire, but the matches were keenly contested and the result a little closer than it seems on paper.

A special mention to Nic Tebbutt who battled against Yorkshire champion and English senior international Emma Brown and lost only on the 17th.

Our team consisted of Nic Tebbutt, Janette McWhirter, Alyson Wood, Brenda Ewbank, Kath Bulman, Sue Cotter and Margaret Shepherd, all of whom produced some great individual play. Unfortunately, our county champion Rosie Waller was unable to play this time.

It was lovely for the team to see many old friends from Yorkshire and some new ones!

My thanks go to the Yorkshire captain Julie Wheeldon for her help and support and to her team for their camaraderie, and to the staff and caterers at Wakefield golf course for looking after us so well. Good luck in the rest of your matches ladies.

Thanks also to my vice-captain Hilary for her help throughout the two days and to Lady President Alyson who provided the goodies which kept everyone in good spirits.

Yorkshire having changed their County Colours from bottle green to navy make it a little difficult to identify the different Counties.  You will find the Cumbria players in Pink team shirts and Yorkshire in white team shirts.  Pictured above are both teams with officials and supporters following the match.

Shining sun flowers all of them. A relaxed Cumbrian Team.

The Cumbria team played host to Yorkshire Senior ladies on a match day that was pretty consistent with all other match days – wet, cold and breezy! What a summer.

Yorkshire brought their A team who proved to be very strong opponents, winning the match 6 points to 1, with Nicola Tebbutt winning Cumbria’s point against Lynn Wass, a newcomer to the Yorkshire side. Other matches were keenly contested by the Cumbrian Veterans who never gave up, with past Captain Janette only losing on the 18th hole. The Cumbrian team were Brenda Ewbank, Kathryn Bulman, Nicola Tebbutt, Nicola Baseley, Janette McWhirter, Sue Cotter and Rosie Waller.

Many thanks to all the supporters on the day, it was very much appreciated and it really does make a difference to the players.

This was the final match of the Richardson Trophy series and I must thank everyone who has played, been a reserve,  caddied or supported the team throughout the season. CVLGA has finished with two fantastic wins against Durham and Northumberland and losses against Cheshire and Lancashire as well as Yorkshire, all of which were very keenly contested.

And finally, can I just say a massive thank you to all the players who have worn the pink shirt this year. You are some of the finest ambassadors of the game and are a credit to the Cumbria Association. Your team spirit, keen competitiveness and mutual support have been first class. I have had a great experience as your Captain; it really has been a privilege and thank you all for making that experience so memorable.

Joan Armstrong CVLGA Captain.

Richardson Trophy Matches 2023
Cumbria v Yorkshire  Fixby GC  Monday 31st July 2023

The team travelled to Huddersfield golf club, Fixby, to play their last Richardson trophy match against a very strong Yorkshire team.

We battled in windy, wet conditions but unfortunately the Yorkshire players were to strong and we lost 6-1.

I must give warm thanks to our winner Trudy Hubbard who came out of retirement to gain our only point.

Also a special mention to our Champion Brenda Ewbank who battled against English senior international Emma Brown just to lose on the 18th.

A massive thank you to all the squad who have supported me throughout the year.

RICHARDSON TROPHY MATCH CUMBRIA V YORKSHIRE

It was lovely to welcome Yorkshire to Furness especially in our 150th Anniversary year.

We had a warm, sunny but breezy day and with not having had any rain for weeks the course was playing a true links with tight lies and hard bounces.

Yet again we had another tough match. Our team played very well and with great spirit.

I was delighted to win my match and Brenda had a fighting half.

I would like to thank Furness for all their support and to Mr Captain for presenting the results on the big screen and showing photos of the players in action.

The result was a win for Yorkshire 5.5 – 1.5.

Yorkshire

Very very hot day at Oakdale Golf Club in Harrogate. Typical Yorkshire tree lined parkland course with very little breeze. The strength of the Yorkshire team was very apparent with all handicaps 2 or below. Brenda having been picked for the jamboree squad was unable to join us as she had to self-isolate due to being track and traced. As ever the squad battled on always smiling and digging in. Trudy was able to keep her opposition rattled and came home with a great win. I had a few problems with buggies finishing up with a flat tyre among other problems. The match was played in great spirit and Oakdale having won 6-1 looked after us very well.
