Cumbria v Northumberland Report

2023
Northumberland v Cumbria, July 27th 2023.

The Bronze team were drawn from the top qualifiers in our County Championship and they were - Maureen Nelson, Liz Hall and Kathleen Robinson from Appleby; Brenda McCaffrey and Sue Ridout, Seascale; Gail Gravett, Penrith; Margaret English and Serena Varah both Silloth; Julia Taylor and Diane Law representing Kirkby Lonsdale, Helena Earl from Workington and Brenda Spilsbury from Barrow.
And what a team they proved to be!
The match day at Alnmouth Golf Club, or as it is better known, Foxton Hall, dawned with a slight sea fret, with talk of perhaps needing to cut the match after the 16th or, if the weather turned really bad, abandoning it altogether. But the weather improved, lifted by our spirits, as, although things were not looking good for Cumbria at the turn, the Cumbrian Ladies proved their mettle, dug deep, and fought an experienced Northumberland team to the very end. It could not have been closer, with four of the six matches going to the 18th hole, the final score being 3 all. As Cumbrian had won the trophy the previous year, a half meant we retained the honour and brought the trophy home again! Well done indeed Ladies!
County colours were presented to Maureen Nelson, Gail Gravett and Sue Ridout for representing Cumbria for the first time; an honour to have awarded them to you Ladies.

Thanks must go to the Northumberland Vice Captain, Su Cummings, and to all her fellow club and team members for making us feel so welcomed. We all thoroughly enjoyed the course and the hospitality. I also thoroughly enjoyed my first event as Vice Captain; a big thank you to everyone involved for making it such a memorable event.
 Joan Armstrong.

2022 Cumbria v Northumberland

The Cumbria bronze team arrived at Furness GC for our annual match against Northumberland.

The links showed its true colours with a challenging wind off the sea but thankfully no rain.

All the matches were keenly contested with the majority finishing at the 17th or 18th.

The final result was a win for Cumbria 5-1

A big thanks to Furness allowing us the use of the course and Alyson (Capt) for all her help with the organisation.

Well done to Margaret English for receiving County Colours.

It has been a real pleasure to be with the team this year.

Janette (vice Captain)

Bronze Match Report v Northumberland
On Tuesday 24th August we arrived at Hexham Golf Club on a lovely sunny day with a very slight breeze.

We had a slightly different team from the Durham match. The team members were Liz Mumberson, Bronze Champion – Cockermouth, Linda Wilson – Penrith, Julia Taylor – Kirkby Lonsdale, Pam Lear, Maggie Donald and Edith Pitman – Kendal, Liz Hall and Kathleen Robinson – Appleby, Brenda Spilsbury and Pat Duxbury – Barrow, Chris Hough – Carus Green and Brenda McCaffrey – Seascale.

Cumbria took an early lead winning the first two matches. Unfortunately it didn’t last as Northumberland took the next 3.5 very closely fought games to clinch the match 3.5 – 2.5.

All matches were played in great spirit and it was a pleasure to watch.   We finished the day with a lovely meal.

A big thanks to Margaret County Captain for her support and Helena County President who supplied us with goodies.

Well played everyone. Vice Captain A;yson
